This apartment block on St Aubyn Street was built in several stages in the late 1930s and 1940s.
A series of building permits were issued to A.O. (Albert Oscar) Brown for the construction of flats on old town sections 603 and 604. The first was in March 1935 with others later dated 1940,1941 and finally one in February 1946 for £2,800. Albert Brown, a carpenter, also built the flats.
It is thought the west side of the building was built first (1938) and the east side in 1941. Further work was also carried out in 1946-47. The name Clarendon Flats first appears in the Wises Directory in 1944.
In December 1876 "Clarendon House" opened on the site and operated for a number of years.
