Waitara's War Memorial Hall was opened by William Anderton, the Minister of Internal Affairs, in September 1959. A crowd of 500 attended the official opening of the £45,000 building.

The memorial feature in the lobby was designed by Maxwell (Max) George Smart (1922-1962), Art Master at Waitara High School. It features a cross with the inscription We shall remember them and four marble tablets listing the names of local men who gave their lives in both World Wars.
